Bathroom remodel in progress with a new shower pan and waterproofed walls before tile

The short version

Fixr's Greensboro guide puts the average bathroom remodel at $11,712, with typical projects running $5,856 to $16,592. A full hall bath runs $7,320 to $19,520, a primary bath $14,640 to $37,088 and a luxury bath $24,400 to $53,680. Shower type, tile and what turns up under the old floor decide where yours lands.

What does each type of bathroom remodel cost in Greensboro?

Fixr's Greensboro bathroom guide is the most detailed local source, and it prices bathrooms by type rather than by one average. Across all projects it runs from $2,440 to $53,680, with typical jobs at $5,856 to $16,592 and an overall average of $11,712. Per square foot, it gives $146 to $415, with $293 as the average.

The per-square-foot figure surprises people, because it is higher than most kitchens. A bathroom packs plumbing, waterproofing, tile and fixtures into a small floor, and none of that work shrinks much when the room does. A powder room still needs a plumber, and a hall bath still needs a shower pan built right.

Bathroom typeFixr Greensboro rangeFixr average
Powder room$2,440 to $5,612$4,026

How does the Cost vs Value report price a Greensboro bath?

The 2025 Cost vs Value report from JLC and Zonda prices one standard project description per city, installed by a professional, so its figures run higher than Fixr's averages and are single points rather than ranges. For Greensboro it lists a midrange bath remodel at $24,385, an upscale bath remodel at $77,481 and a universal design bath at $40,437.

The universal design figure deserves a closer look if anyone in the house plans to stay for the long run. The report's spec for it covers accessibility features, and it estimates that 58.3 percent of the cost comes back at resale in Greensboro, against 72.2 percent for the midrange remodel and 39.3 percent for the upscale one. Our aging-in-place bathroom checklist breaks that kind of bath into steps you can take one at a time.

What does a tub-to-shower conversion or walk-in shower cost?

Fixr's Greensboro page lists a tub-to-shower conversion at $3,904 on average as a line item within a larger bath remodel. HomeGuide's national figures for a conversion run wider, $2,000 to $12,000 with a $7,000 average, because a job done on its own carries its own demolition, plumbing and finish work instead of sharing them with the rest of a remodel.

For the shower itself, Fixr's Greensboro averages are $4,880 for a prefabricated walk-in shower and $7,808 for a custom tub and shower or walk-in shower. HomeGuide's national ranges are $1,000 to $8,000 for prefab and $3,500 to $15,000 for custom tile. Tile showers cost more because the waterproofing, the pan and the tile setting are all labor, and the cheapest shortcut in any of them is the one that leaks.

One practical point: if the bath you are converting holds the only tub in the house, think about who will need to bathe there in the years ahead, small children and dogs included. Keeping one tub somewhere is often the right call. Freestanding tubs, if you want one elsewhere, average $5,466 in Fixr's Greensboro line items. Our tub-to-shower conversions start with that conversation.

How much does a new bathroom vanity add?

Vanities have the widest spread of any bath fixture. Fixr's Greensboro line item averages $1,171, from about $293 for a small vanity up to $2,928 for a large one. HomeAdvisor's national range is $300 to $2,200 with a $1,500 average.

This Old House prices labor alone at $665 to $3,300, averaging $1,983, and that figure excludes the cabinet, top, sink and faucet. Labor runs high when the job changes plumbing: going from a single to a double vanity adds a second drain and supply, and moving the vanity to a different wall means opening the floor or wall to reroute. A same-size swap on existing plumbing sits at the low end. We size that up first on any vanity installation.

Are powder rooms and half baths a cheaper place to start?

They are the cheapest bathrooms to remodel and often the most visible, since guests use them. Fixr's Greensboro figures put a powder room at $2,440 to $5,612, averaging $4,026, and a half bath at $2,928 to $6,344, averaging $4,636. With no shower or tub, the job is mostly a toilet, a vanity, a floor, lighting and paint.

The budget stays small as long as the fixtures stay put. Under-stair powder rooms are the exception that catches people out: the ceiling slopes, the door swing is tight and a wall-hung or narrow vanity may be the only one that fits. A half bath added where none existed is a different project altogether, because it needs new drain, vent and supply lines run to the spot and a plumbing permit to go with them.

If your full baths are sound but tired, starting with the powder room is a sensible way to test finishes and get a feel for how a remodel runs in your house before you commit to the bigger room.

Which choices push a Greensboro bath toward the top of its range?

Inside any of Fixr's bands, a few decisions decide where a project lands. Fixture brand matters less than people expect, because the labor to install a mid-priced faucet and a costly one is close to identical; the gap is the fixture itself. These are the items that move real money.

  • Moving the toilet, tub or shower drain. Rerouting drain lines is slow work, and Greensboro requires a plumbing permit to work on drain, waste and vent piping or to connect fixtures.
  • Custom tile versus a prefab surround. Fixr's Greensboro page puts ceramic or porcelain floor tile at $10 to $20 per square foot and natural stone at $20 to $50, with the average bath floor install at $1,757.
  • The shower design. A curbless or low-curb shower needs the floor framing recessed or built up so water drains the right way, which adds carpentry before any tile goes down.
  • Size of the room. A primary bath has more of everything, which is why Fixr's primary average of $25,864 is more than twice its full-bath average.
  • Lighting and ventilation. New fixtures and a properly ducted exhaust fan bring an electrician into the job, and an electrical permit with it.

Permits and hidden damage: the costs people forget to budget

Fixr puts permit costs for a Greensboro bathroom remodel at $146 to $390. The city requires a building permit for structural work and for non-structural work over $15,000, and plumbing and electrical work each carry their own permit. A cosmetic refresh may need none; a gut remodel that reconnects fixtures needs a plumbing permit.

The bigger unknown is under the old tub and behind the tile. Fixr's Greensboro guide carries an allowance of about $2,928 for mold remediation and hidden water damage found during a bath remodel. A slow leak at a tub drain or a failed shower pan can soften the subfloor for years before anyone notices. When we find that, the fix comes before the new floor, and our subfloor repair work is priced from what we find, not guessed.

Turning the ranges into a number for your bathroom

Pick the row in the table that fits your room, then adjust. Moving fixtures, choosing custom tile or building a curbless shower pushes toward the top of the row. Keeping the layout, using a quality prefab shower base and reusing the vanity location keeps you near the bottom. Add permits and leave room for what is under the floor.

A walk-through settles the rest. We look at the floor around the toilet and tub, the condition of the valve, where the drains run and how the room is vented, and we write the scope from that. Call any hour and we will set one up for your bathroom remodel.

  • Measure the room and note which fixtures, if any, need to move.
  • Choose prefab or tiled for the shower, and decide whether a tub stays.
  • Decide on the vanity size and whether it stays on the same wall.
  • Pick floor tile or another wet-room floor and price it by the square foot.
  • Add permits and an allowance for what may be under the old floor.
  • Compare the total against the row in Fixr's table that fits your room.
