Short answer
We remodel kitchens and build decks across Alamance County, from Burlington and Gibsonville toward Mebane. Growth is the defining local fact: the county went from 171,415 residents in 2020 to an estimated 186,177 in 2025, with 2,027 building permits issued in 2025, so newer subdivisions now fill in around towns that grew up with the textile mills.
A growing county with a 1988 median build year
Point2Homes lists a median build year of 1988, and Census QuickFacts puts owner occupancy at 65.0 percent, and the median owner-occupied home is valued at $241,500. In practice that means two kinds of houses. Late-1980s ranches and two-stories often still have their original kitchens, while newer homes have a kitchen that works but a back yard with nothing more than a concrete stoop. Both end up pointing at the same two spaces: the kitchen and the outdoor room off it.
Mebane roughly tripled in population between 1990 and 2020, which says a lot about how much of the eastern county is recent construction. In a house fifteen or twenty years old, a full gut rarely makes sense. Painting cabinets, adding an island with seating and a new backsplash often give the kitchen the update it needs for much less than a tear-out.
What goes into a deck that lasts in Piedmont clay
Decks add new footprint, so they need a permit. Under the state's residential code, a deck footing has to bottom out a foot or more into soil nobody has dug, and Piedmont clay drains slowly, so we set footings on firm soil and grade underneath so water runs away from the house. We also flash the ledger where it meets the rim joist, since water trapped behind a ledger is a frequent cause of rot at the house. Pressure-treated pine costs less up front; composite costs more and asks for less upkeep. On a deck off a newly remodeled kitchen, many owners also want shade over part of it, and a patio cover tied into the house roof is the natural next step.
Burlington, Graham and where permits come from
Graham, the county seat, is 23.9 road miles east of Greensboro, about 34 minutes away, and Burlington is a little closer. Which office permits a job depends on whether the address is inside a city or out in the county, and Gibsonville straddles the Guilford line, so we confirm jurisdiction before applying. The county's textile history runs deep, with at least 14 major mills operating along the Haw River between 1832 and 1880; Elon University, with 1,403 employees at its main campus, is a newer anchor. Wherever the address falls, we set the inspection schedule before the first footing hole is dug.
